The Impact When Caring and Technology Meets

Technology is an important component of the health care field because doctors, nurses and medical specialists use technology in the diagnosis and treatment of health problems.

Fostering Innovation
As health care organizations adopt information technology to improve quality and patient safety, reduce errors, increase efficiency, decrease time-consuming and redundant paperwork, and enhance communication, they’re finding that IT can significantly impact nursing work flow.

Innovative Nursing Practice
Today, we can say that technology really has a big impact on Nursing. This is apparent through the improvements on the four nursing areas.
First in line is the Nursing Practice where EHR is being used for assessing problems, documenting care, tracking the care process and measuring the outcomes. Thus, the electronic version of nursing practice has revolutionized and transformed nursing practice.

Second, the Nursing Administration in hospitals has also changed with the introduction of the computer that clinks nursing departments together. Most policy and procedure manuals are assessed and retrieved by computer. The Internet is being used by nurses to access digital libraries, online resources, and research protocols at the bedside.

Third, is the Nursing Education. Most universities and schools of Nursing offer computer enhanced courses, online courses and or distance education. They are becoming universities without walls where student can attend a university anywhere in the world without being present. Today, most faculty members use the internet to teach courses via the web and communicate with their students via e-mail. Interactive teleconferencing courses also bring live classroom lectures via computer systems via digital telephone lines or satellite communication to remote sites.

Time, distance, and cost are no longer barriers to educational programs.

Electronic Bibliographic Literature Systems
Lastly, is the improvement of Nursing Research. With the advancement of computer technology databases supporting nursing research emerged, principally for online searching and retrieving information from the electronic bibliographic literature systems or other databases that contain relevant healthcare content such as drug data. These developed databases are used to improve the evidenced-base nursing practice guidelines. The internet also provides online access to the millions of Web resources around the world which have increased the capabilities and expanded the field of nursing research. The advancement of internet had increased the adoption and utilization of information technology in nursing and healthcare. Healthcare had also increasingly partnered with information technology for the provision of patient care.

Adopting clinical technology requires a new skill set for nurses and nurse leaders, the roundtable participants agreed.

“It’s an evolution, not a revolution.”

The future of nursing and Nursing Informatics is in alignment with the future of healthcare – growth in the use of technology to ensure safety, positive outcomes and satisfaction of patients. Nursing is at the forefront of this wave of technology innovation.
